Aerial Photography Considered Harmful

Amazing

Whatever next! That post includes a great comment from "George":

the key word is "Security."

Once that word is uttered, you have an obligation to immediately cease any questioning or speculation as to the reason for it. It may make no sense to you, but it should be sufficient to have faith that Someone In Authority has made that decision, possibly based on information that must necessarily remain confidential, for a good reason that must necessarily remain secret.

So when anyone with an official uniform or badge utters the word "Security," our duty is to immediately shut the window shade, put the camera away, and say "Thank you for keeping us safe." We will never have Victory in this terrible War without putting complete, unquestioning faith and trust in Authorities who are doing everything they can to protect us.

Asking questions or publicly speculating on the rationale for what the Authorities ask of us always aids the enemy. Unquestioning obedience helps the Authorities defeat the enemy. That is the reality in the Global War on Terrorism.

With the faith, trust, and unquestioning obedience of all citizens we will win this War. And once Victory is ours, the Authorities will gradually restore selected rights and liberties as they deem appropriate.

Into the 10th dimension

Never did any string theory back when I was dabbling in theoretical physics at uni, so I've never really understood what it was. What better way to find out than with a cool little flash animation!

via collision detection

Update: A comment on another blog linking this says it is all incorrect based on current string theory! Shame!

Look closer...

At first it looks like some kind of art project...

Petta leaves Bradford City

Bradford's only ever Indonesian player officially left the club today.

Bradford have cancelled the contract of midfielder Bobby Petta.

The move is to allow Rotterdam-born Petta, 31, to join Australian league outfit Adelaide United.

Petta began his career at Feyenoord, before joining Ipswich, where after four years he moved on to Celtic, who sent him on a short loan to Fulham.

He joined Darlington in February 2005 and moved to Bradford on a free transfer last summer, since when he has made 23 League appearances.

He didn't appear in many games, and I never saw him play, but judging by the comments from fans on the mailing list he didn't do very well. I kind of imagined he might be one of those players with an unusual style of play that didn't endear him to the average fan, but was effective nonetheless (cf. Etienne Verveer, Richard Liburd) but he was hauled off early in games so often that he hardly got a chance... or else he really was just crap!

Why bother watching?

First lineup with the new players on the team and Clayton is straight in there, and Encarnacion is benched.

Chris Denorfia RF
Adam Dunn LF
Ken Griffey Jr. CF
Rich Aurilia 3B
Scott Hatteberg 1B
Brandon Phillips 2B
Royce Clayton SS
Jason LaRue C
Aaron Harang P

I hate watching and hoping players on your team fail to reduce their future playing time. This is worse than when Womack was on the team early this season!

Stupid Reds

It's one of those depressing moments when a team you follow does something really stupid...

CINCINNATI -- The Cincinnati Reds overhauled their rickety bullpen Thursday, getting Gary Majewski and Bill Bray in an eight-player trade that sent outfielder Austin Kearns and shortstop Felipe Lopez to the Washington Nationals.
The playoff-hopeful Reds also acquired shortstop Royce Clayton, infielder Brendan Harris and pitcher Daryl Thompson from the last-place Nationals.
Clayton most likely would replace Lopez, who made the All-Star Game last year. The Reds gave up reliever Ryan Wagner, a first-round pick in 2004 who has struggled the last two seasons.

A collection of players not worth either one of the two position players the Reds gave away! And the awful Clayton given the starting shortstop job - unbelievable! I guess that means Juan Castro is freed up to play at third base more now, so our third best hitter can spend more time on the bench.

Two good hitters for a couple of middle relievers and Royce Clayton.... "playoff-hopeful", my arse!

first post

some generator links I used while trying to come up with a page name:
The Band Name Generator - nicely bizarre random names (bagoftrees)
Brazil Name Generator - what you be called if you played for Brazil? (Dureito!)
Fake Name Generator - random name and address with selectable nationalities (Alexis M. Anderson)

All very nice, but the results were usually too long. Go with a Kraftwerk reference instead, I think.
